MPs and energy experts have raised fears motorists have been “taken for a very expensive ride”, after officials searched the offices of BP and Shell for evidence of price-rigging.

The companies are suspected of distorting the oil price since 2002, meaning drivers have potentially been ripped off for more than 10 years.

Over that time, petrol prices have risen dramatically by more than 80 per cent to around 135p per litre.

European investigators, who raided the London offices of BP and Shell, said the alleged price-rigging could have had a “huge impact” on the cost of oil, including the price of fuel for consumers.

The investigation into market-fixing already has echoes of the Libor scandal, which saw the banks falsely report key interest rates used to calculate mortgages. It cost several British banks hundreds of millions of pounds in fines.

Robert Halfon, the MP for Harlow who has long campaigned for an investigation into the oil market, said high prices have been “crushing families across Britain”.

He called for UK authorities to launch an urgent inquiry and for oil companies to “come clean and show some responsibility for what is happening to the international price”.

The raids were part of an investigation across the continent by the European Commission’s competition authorities. Offices owned by Platts, a price-reporting agency, and Statoil, a Norwegian oil company, were also raided.

European officials said several companies may have colluded in manipulating the price of both oil and green “biofuels”.

This could have happened if the oil companies provided false information to Platts, the main reporting agency that collects and reports prices to the wider market.

“Any such behaviour, if established, may amount to violations of European antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices and abuses of a dominant market position,” the European Commission said.

“Even small distortions of assessed prices may have a huge impact on the prices of crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels purchases and sales, potentially harming final consumers.”

It said the raids were a “preliminary step to investigate suspected anticompetitive practices” and “does not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behaviour nor does it prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself”.

The inquiry comes after The Telegraph revealed growing concerns about the reliability of oil prices last year.

A study for G20 finance ministers, including George Osborne, said traders from banks oil companies and hedge funds have an “incentive” to distort the market and are likely to try to report wrong prices.

Scott O’Malia, a top official at the US Commodities Futures Commission, has also previously drawn attention to the “striking similarity” between the potential for manipulating oil and Libor. The price reporting agencies strongly deny any similarities between their methods and the way Libor was calculated.

The information published by Platts and other reporting agencies is used widely by companies as a guide for pricing their oil-related products, including petrol.

Obama Claims no Tyranny & Illegal Spying! May 10/13

Obama’s latest message in a speech to the graduating class of The Ohio State University: Ignore and reject those who warn of tyranny in our ‘brave’ government. ( Illegally supporting criminal bankers Tami)

It’s a common thread throughout the talking points of government heads today, warning you of ‘dangerous’ individuals who dare to question the government that Obama calls ’brave’ and ‘creative’. We’ve seen it with the FBI, asserting that you should not be looking at anything beyond the official photos and information released on the Boston bombings. Just questioning why no one is talking about the presence of bomb squads, bomb drills, and even the bomb drill that was broadcast over the loud speaker system is not allowed.

Or how about asking why taxpayers continue to fund mega banks that have been caught funding Mexican drug cartels and Middle Eastern terror cells? Woops, we’re not supposed to ask about the 83 billion that the banks get annually thanks to the taxpayers.

In Obama’s May 5th speech to the graduation class of the Ohio State University, he said:

“Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity… They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.”

Asking Questions Is No Longer Tolerated

On a scale never before seen in this country, asking reasonable questions of the government is simply not tolerated. And what’s amazing is that in many cases we’re not even ‘theorizing’ or concluding anything. We’re literally just asking questions that any individual really analyzing these situations would want to know. But Obama simply cannot have that, because legitimate questions like ‘why are we funding the mega banks who fund the drug trade and terror cells’ cannot be answered with any ounce of truth (or else the jig would be up).

Even Google has released a post on the skyrocketing levels of government censorship on the web, detailing how governments around the globe are now demanding that the internet juggernaut literally censor content that is critical of government and government officials. Right now, in fact, over 24,000 thousand pieces of content that apparently ‘criticize’ the government face complete obliteration from Google at large. Only time will tell if Google falls under government pressure and decides to begin open elimination of this content and usher in an entirely government-controlled engine in which only pieces that praise Obama and the government at large are allows to be seen by researchers.

The fact that someone in Google decided to author a post on the subject is a step in the right direction, but we need vocal outrage now in order to prevent such a scenario. That said, we also need to ask the questions they absolutely do not want us to ask.

I Have Some Questions to Ask

Personally, I have more than a few such questions. And knowing that my work is likely among the thousands of content pieces that the government would love to send down the memory hole, I believe it’s time to be louder than ever when asking. From the countless lies spoken during and after the elections that have amounted to dozens of broken promises that somehow are supposed to be forgotten, to much more serious issues like the NDAA and the renewal of the memorable warrantless wiretapping legislation known as FISA.

But according to Obama, this all goes into what makes his policies ‘brave, creative, and unique’.

The real capabilities and behavior of the US surveillance state are almost entirely unknown to the American public because, like most things of significance done by the US government, it operates behind an impenetrable wall of secrecy. But a seemingly spontaneous admission this week by a former FBI counterterrorism agent provides a rather startling acknowledgment of just how vast and invasive these surveillance activities are.

Over the past couple days, cable news tabloid shows such as CNN's Out Front with Erin Burnett have been excitingly focused on the possible involvement in the Boston Marathon attack of Katherine Russell, the 24-year-old American widow of the deceased suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev. As part of their relentless stream of leaks uncritically disseminated by our Adversarial Press Corps, anonymous government officials are claiming that they are now focused on telephone calls between Russell and Tsarnaev that took place both before and after the attack to determine if she had prior knowledge of the plot or participated in any way.

On Wednesday night, Burnett interviewed Tim Clemente, a former FBI counterterrorism agent, about whether the FBI would be able to discover the contents of past telephone conversations between the two. He quite clearly insisted that they could:

BURNETT: Tim, is there any way, obviously, there is a voice mail they can try to get the phone companies to give that up at this point. It's not a voice mail. It's just a conversation. There's no way they actually can find out what happened, right, unless she tells them?

CLEMENTE: "No, there is a way. We certainly have ways in national security investigations to find out exactly what was said in that conversation. It's not necessarily something that the FBI is going to want to present in court, but it may help lead the investigation and/or lead to questioning of her. We certainly can find that out.

BURNETT: "So they can actually get that? People are saying, look, that is incredible.

CLEMENTE: "No, welcome to America. All of that stuff is being captured as we speak whether we know it or like it or not."

"All of that stuff" - meaning every telephone conversation Americans have with one another on US soil, with or without a search warrant - "is being captured as we speak".

On Thursday night, Clemente again appeared on CNN, this time with host Carol Costello, and she asked him about those remarks. He reiterated what he said the night before but added expressly that "all digital communications in the past" are recorded and stored:

Let's repeat that last part: "no digital communication is secure", by which he means not that any communication is susceptible to government interception as it happens (although that is true), but far beyond that: all digital communications - meaning telephone calls, emails, online chats and the like - are automatically recorded and stored and accessible to the government after the fact. To describe that is to define what a ubiquitous, limitless Surveillance State is.

There have been some previous indications that this is true. Former AT&T engineer Mark Klein revealed that AT&T and other telecoms had built a special network that allowed the National Security Agency full and unfettered access to data about the telephone calls and the content of email communications for all of their customers. Specifically, Klein explained "that the NSA set up a system that vacuumed up Internet and phone-call data from ordinary Americans with the cooperation of AT&T" and that "contrary to the government's depiction of its surveillance program as aimed at overseas terrorists . . . much of the data sent through AT&T to the NSA was purely domestic." But his amazing revelations were mostly ignored and, when Congress retroactively immunized the nation's telecom giants for their participation in the illegal Bush spying programs, Klein's claims (by design) were prevented from being adjudicated in court.

That every single telephone call is recorded and stored would also explain this extraordinary revelation by the Washington Post in 2010:

Every day, collection systems at the National Security Agency intercept and store 1.7 billion e-mails, phone calls and other types of communications.

It would also help explain the revelations of former NSA official William Binney, who resigned from the agency in protest over its systemic spying on the domestic communications of US citizens, that the US government has "assembled on the order of 20 trillion transactions about US citizens with other US citizens" (which counts only communications transactions and not financial and other transactions), and that "the data that's being assembled is about everybody. And from that data, then they can target anyone they want."
