Landslide Vote for GMO Labeling in Maine Legislature

In a landslide 141-4 vote, the Maine House of Representatives voted Tuesday to advance bill LD 718, which would require special labeling for seeds and foods made with genetically modified (GMO) ingredients.
The Bangor Daily News reports that during debate there was “little disagreement” about the importance of GMO labeling.
“The consumers have a right to know,” said Rep. Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop. “The people want to know what’s in their food, and they want to be able to make a choice that’s right.”
As supporters of the bill celebrate, they are also braced for what they say is an inevitable battle between the wishes of the people and Ag Giant Monsanto, who has already threatened to sue states that pass similar labeling laws.

What is GMO?
Agricultural Crops That Have a Risk of Being GMO
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.
For consumers, it can be difficult to stay up-to-date on food ingredients that are at-risk of being genetically modified, as the list of at-risk agricultural ingredients is frequently changing. As part of the Non-GMO Project’s commitment to informed consumer choice, we work diligently to maintain an accurate list of risk ingredients.
Agricultural products are segmented into two groups: (1) those that are high-risk of being GMO because they are currently in commercial production, and (2) those that have a monitored risk because suspected or known incidents of contamination have occurred and/or the crops have genetically modified relatives in commercial production with which cross-pollination (and consequently contamination) is possible. Dangers in Children’s Vitamins & Herbs Heal! May 31/13
82% of kids aren't eating all of their veggies1. Without enough vegetables, kids may not be getting all of the nutrients they need.

The implication? That Flintstones vitamins somehow fill this nutritional void. But let's look a little closer at some of these presumably healthy ingredients....
Aspartame is a synthetic combination of the amino acids aspartic acid and l-phenylalanine, and is known to convert into highly toxic methanol and formaldehyde in the body. Aspartame has been linked to over 40 adverse health effects in the biomedical literature, and has been shown to exhibit both neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity  What business does a chemical like this have doing in a children's vitamin, especially when non-toxic, non-synthetic non-nutritive sweeteners like stevia already exist?
Next, let's look closer at Cupric Oxide, 2mg of which is included in each serving of Flinstone's Complete chewable vitamins as a presumably 'nutritional' source of 'copper,' supplying "100% of the Daily Value (Ages 4+), according to Flintstones Vitamins Web site's Nutritional Info.
But what is Cupric Oxide? A nutrient or a chemical?
According to the European Union's Dangerous Substance Directive, one of the main EU laws concerning chemical safety, Cupric Oxide is listed as a Hazardous substance, classified as both "Harmful (XN)" and "Dangerous for the environment" (N). Consider that it has industrial applications as a pigment in ceramics, and as a chemical in the production of rayon fabric and dry cell batteries. In may be technically correct to call it a mineral, but should it be listed as a nutrient in a children's vitamin? We think not.
COAL TAR ARTIFICIAL COLORING AGENTS
A well-known side effect of using synthetic dyes is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. For direct access to study abstracts on this topic view our Food Coloring research page. There is also indication that the neurotoxicity of artificial food coloring agents increase when combined with aspartame, making the combination of ingredients in Flintstones even more concerning.
Each serving of Flinstones Complete Chewable vitamins contain 12 mg of zinc oxide, which the manufacturer claims delivers 75% of the Daily Value to children 2 & 3 years of age. Widely used as a sun protection factor (SPF) in sunscreens, The EU's Dangerous Substance Directive classifies it as an environmental Hazard, "Dangerous for the environment (N)." How it can be dangerous to the environment, but not for humans ingesting it, escapes me. One thing is for sure, if one is to ingest supplemental zinc, or market it for use by children, it makes much more sense using a form that is organically bound (i.e. 'chelated') to an amino acid like glycine, as it will be more bioavailable and less toxic.
Sorbitol is a synthetic sugar substitute which is classified as a sugar alcohol. It can be argued that it has no place in the human diet, much less in a child's. The ingestion of higher amounts have been linked to gastrointestinal disturbances from abdominal pain to more serious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.
The one clear warning on the Flinstone's Web site concerns this chemical. While it is impossible to die from consuming iron from food, e.g. spinach, ferrous fumarate is an industrial mineral and not found in nature as food. In fact, ferrous fumarate is so toxic that accidental overdose of products containing this form is "a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6." The manufacturer further warns:
Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.
HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL
Finding hydrogenated oil in anything marketed to children is absolutely unacceptable. These semi-synthetic fatty acids incorporate into our tissues and have been linked to over a dozen adverse health effects, from coronary artery disease to cancer, violent behavior to fatty liver disease.
GMO CORN STARCH
While it can be argued that the amount of GMO corn starch in this product is negligible, even irrelevant, we disagree. It is important to hold accountable brands that refuse to label their products honestly, especially when they contain ingredients that have been produced through genetic modification. The 'vitamin C' listed as ascorbic acid in Flintstones is likely also produced from GMO corn. Let's remember that Bayer's Ag-biotech division, Bayer CropScience, poured $381,600 of cash into defeating the proposition 37 GMO labeling bill in California. Parents have a right to protect their children against the well-known dangers of genetically modified foods and the agrichemicals that contaminate them, don't they? GMO corn starch is GMO, plain and simple. We'd appreciate it if Bayer would label their "vitamins" accordingly.
In summary, Bayer's Flintstone's vitamin brand is far from a natural product, and the consumer should be aware of the unintended, adverse health effects that may occur as a result of using it.

Italian Court Rules MMR Vaccine Caused Autism: US Media Blacks Out Story

The debate over vaccines continues as an Italian court ruled in favor of the Bocca family whose nine-year-old son became autistic after receiving the MMR (Measles/Mumps & Rubella) vaccine. I came across this case and felt it was a good idea to report on this as the vaccine debate has been a hot topic here lately. Although the case concluded in 2012, the information is just as relevant today.
UPDATE: We realize the controversy surrounding Wakefield and his study, however the point is others have replicated his findings numerous times with accuracy and it backs up his claims. Instead of focusing on Wakefield, observe the other studies involved and the massive growing movement to re-think vaccines based on science and evidence.
Valentino Bocca was given the MMR vaccine when he was 15 months old in 2004. The family has stated that immediately after the jab their son began showing signs of serious discomfort. The Bocca family decided to act and took the case to court. Judges determined the vaccine did cause the autism after new evidence was presented and awarded the Bocca family 174,000 euro (£140,000) after the Italian Health Ministry conceded the MMR vaccine caused autism in their nine-year-old son Valentino. After the ruling, Italian lawyers began examining around 100 similar cases which they believe could lead to more families pursuing court cases.
Of course this case does not come with two sides to the argument. In Britain, doctors and health experts insist that the onset of autism after the vaccine was merely a coincidence and that other children develop autism around the same time. The official statement of the Department of Health is that ‘there is a wealth of evidence showing children who receive the MMR vaccine are no more at risk of autism than those who don’t.’
The Bocca case is not the first case where children have been allegedly damaged by vaccines. The Vaccine Injury Compensation Program has paid out over $2 billion in compensation to families who have been damaged by vaccines. The Bocca case ruling will likely re-open much debate over vaccine safety and effectiveness. This was largely made popular when the respected medical journal The Lancet published an article in 1998, making a connection between the triple vaccine and autism. Later on, the author’s methods were discredited but this of course came with controversy as well. Luckily, the news of it alone was enough for families to re-question the vaccine when thinking of their children.
Though the debate is still ongoing, many people are seriously questioning vaccines and this isn’t just the average person. Medical doctors have been educating themselves further on vaccines as the evidence continues to pile up about the ineffectiveness and lack of safety associated with vaccines. The number of autism cases has risen greatly since the 1970s, as the number of vaccines a child receives continues to rise dramatically.
Although it is not yet clear what the new evidence was that concluded the Bocca case, it is almost certain that it will continue to build the case for re-thinking vaccines.
The black out in US media is a prime example of how much medical information is censored in North America. This may add to the fact that it seems North America is a lot more unaware of healthy practices regarding medicine, lifestyle and diet. Of course this isn’t to say that everyone is like this in North America, but when you look at the numbers we can see that North America is among the unhealthiest when it comes to developed countries.
A great example of how the medical industry tends to avoid new vaccine science comes in the case of Dr. Andrew Wakefield. He has been involved in extensively reviewing the MMR vaccine and its safety, and has found not only some scary results, but also a great opposition and blacking out when it comes to the medical field looking at his evidence. The videos below go into this story in depth.
While some might bring up the fact that Dr. Wakefield’s work has been discredited I have found some very interesting words from Dr. Mercola on the matter that is worth the read. If you have have heard of the denial surrounding Dr. Wakefield’s previous work, it is important to note that there have number 28+ studies done that support and back up his work since he published in 1988. “It’s virtually impossible to read an article about the MMR vaccine without coming across a reference to British gastroenterologist Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s 1998 research published in The Lancet, which suggested there may be a link between the MMR vaccine, chronic bowel disease and autism. Ever since the article’s publication, it has remained one of the most cited yet controversial studies on the topic of vaccine safety.
Few public health officials or doctors speaking about vaccination in the media today fail to drive home the point that Wakefield’s research was subsequently “discredited” by the General Medical Council in Britain, while completely ignoring the facts about what his research actually showed, and the long list of studies done since then by other researchers that back up his initial findings.
Dr. Wakefield’s 1998 study involved a retrospective case series analysis, which essentially reviews the clinical histories of a group of patients with a constellation of signs and symptoms that link them together and create a pattern. In this case, it was a group of autistic children with gastrointestinal problems, which led to the discovery of a novel bowel disease that Wakefield and his colleagues at the Royal Free Hospital in London first described.
But rather than celebrating the discovery of a tangible, treatable and potentially preventable serious health problem that could help those suffering with similar health issues, Wakefield’s discovery became a hotly debated controversy in which Dr. Wakefield’s personal and professional reputation was smeared.

What I Know About Smart Meters
An alarming scenario is occurring in my Gloucester (Massachusetts) rental home. A high-pitched frequency is blanketing the house for longer and longer periods of time throughout the day and night. The bony plates in my skull react by tightening to protect my brain, and I feel a sense of anxiety or stress, simultaneous overcharge and exhaustion. The vagus nerve is trying to defend against the onslaught by clamping down, and this reaction disrupts nearly every biological process.
Now, a strange new phenomenon is unfolding. Beginning around late morning, my appliances begin talking to one another. The refrigerator seems to play a significant role, chiming to the upstairs heater, the downstairs heater, and the water heater, and they take turns cycling for several hours. It's an ingenious technology. Instead of each appliance in the house operating according to its individual thermostat and drawing on the power grid in a random fashion, an organizing intelligence is choreographing the electric demand.
The only problem is that I didn't sign on to take part in or to pay for a large biological and environmental experiment that is not monitoring biology or the environment. As far as I know, neither did most of the residents in the United States. And I realize that my health is being quantifiably adversely affected by external artificial frequencies. However, many Americans are being affected by man made-radio waves, and don't know it. Neither do their health care providers.
Recently, an unrelenting migraine led me to the discovery of a new utility meter located on a vacant summer home at the end a dirt lane near my house. Both the pain in my head and my German-made radiation-measuring meter confirm that it is a powerful wireless transmitter.
Most of the birds have left and the squirrels only visit for a short time. I don't believe that they are simply off mating. They are avoiding being microwaved.
And in late March, in the middle of the night, the thermostats were once again overtaken by external choreography, even though they were turned to low settings. Although the local demand for electricity is minimal in the middle of the night, my appliances seemingly consumed about 3 hours of electricity whether they needed it or not, for a few nights in a row.
I spent one of those nights urinating every 15 minutes and woke dehydrated and with internal bleeding. It wasn't a bladder infection; it was a massive disruption of the kidney-bladder energy frequency. A second night my blood oxygen level suddenly dropped so dramatically that my heart went into deep distress. Due to the layout of my house, I couldn't get out of the range of the microwave signals between the devices in the appliances. I was receiving the equivalent of electroshock torture. I slept one night freezing in the car, another night on a friend's porch.
I went to the health clinic, and as I was sitting in the waiting room, I heard and felt the high-pitched frequency come through the neighborhood. An elderly patient in another room immediately began suffering a severe coughing fit and had to be nebulized. I heard another patient describing in meticulous detail to her health care professional the tightening, tension and nerve irritation that was occurring along one side of her body. Even though I don't know her and never saw her, I suspect that she sleeps with that side of her body against either her radio frequency-emitting electric meter or the kitchen wall that backs up to her new micro-chipped refrigerator.
Another friend woke up at 2:00 am with a herniated disc. Like many residents in other states where thousands of adverse health affects have been reported due to smart grid infrastructure, she is starting to turn off all of her appliances and fuses at night. Another friend with a chronic health issue felt as if she was losing her mind. She couldn't remember if she had taken her medication or washed her hair. Her short-term memory was decimated.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE) research facility Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, "a controller is a small circuit board built into household appliances that reduces stress on the power grid by continually monitoring fluctuations in available power. During periods of high demand, appliances equipped with the control automatically shut down for a short period of time, resulting in a cumulative reduction that can maintain the stability of the grid."
"The controller is essentially a simple computer chip that can be installed in regular household appliances like dishwashers, clothes dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and water heaters. The chip senses when there is a disruption in the grid and turns the appliances off for a few seconds or minutes to allow the grid to stabilize. The controllers can also be programmed to delay the restart of appliances. The delay allows the appliances to be turned on one at a time rather than all at once to ease power restoration following an outage."
Are entire communities being used as experiments for new technologies that radiate our homes? Or perhaps potential financial investment opportunities? Will energy grids be engineered to consume electricity based on the fluctuations of profit margins for the commodities market?
In 2010 Southern California Edison Company (SCE) was awarded $40 million from the DOE to conduct "a living laboratory for simultaneously demonstrating and assessing the interoperability of, and interaction between, various Smart Grid technologies and systems . . . "The project will allow SCE, project participants and the DOE to verify the viability of Smart Grid technologies and cyber security when deployed in an integrated framework. The project will also provide a means to quantify the costs and benefits of these technologies in terms of overall energy consumption, operational efficiencies, and societal and environmental benefits."
The "living laboratory," however, isn't monitoring any living organisms or the impact to their health. As other countries have discovered, it is necessary to shield the homes of individuals who have neurological health issues including autism and MS, as well as those with medical devices like pacemakers or deep brain stimulators for Parkinson's. The homes of pregnant women should also be protected.
The new technologies do not recognize the damage to the immune system that is occurring at night when the parasympathetic nervous system is dominating, or the damage to bees, bats and birds that are sensitive to frequencies outside the human sensory range. Only attentive humans will be able to detect those costs.
Neither Nature nor human ecology can afford the burgeoning cost of humanity's conquest and commoditization of the EMF spectrum. In his 2008 book Living Safely with Electromagnetic Radiation, Jim Waugh wrote, "The price of a quart of milk in 1905 was about 7 cents. If the price of milk had increased at the same rate as the level of electromagnetic radiation, we would be paying $14 million per quart today."
HaltMAsmartmeters.org and StopSmartMetersMassachusetts.org call on MA residents to understand that there are other ways of reducing the carbon footprint that do not require utility companies to blanket the nation with a computerized microwave repeater system that operates in power densities that are illegal in other nations. The technologies, including compact fluorescent bulbs, are not green, not safe, exorbitantly expensive, and have never been tested for environmental or human impact. Until now. It is time for the experimentation, without knowledge or consent, to halt.

Where Did the High Cholesterol-Heart Disease Myth Originate?
The idea that high cholesterol causes heart disease can be traced back to Rudolph Virchow (1821-1902), a German pathologist who found thickening in the arteries in people he autopsied, which he ascribed to a collection of cholesterol.
Later, Ancel Keys (1904-2004), a well-known physiologist, published his seminal paper known as the "Seven Countries Study1," which served as the basis for nearly all of the initial scientific support for the Cholesterol Theory.
The study linked the consumption of saturated fat to coronary heart disease. However, what many don’t know is that Keys selectively analyzed information from only seven countries to prove his correlation, rather than comparing all the data available at the time -- from 22 countries.
As you might suspect, the studies he excluded were those that did not fit with his hypothesis, namely those that showed a low percentage fat in their diet and a high incidence of death from CHD as well as those with a high-fat diet and low incidence of CHD. When all 22 countries are analyzed, no correlation at all can be found.

3. LISINOPRIL (Prinivil/Zestril) AND NORVASC (Amlodipine)
Use: Reduction of High Blood Pressure
In combination, Lisinopril and Norvasc make up a whopping 23% of the top prescribed medications. This makes them the most prescribed generic medications (if combined) for cardiovascular disease and blood pressure. Individually, Lisinopril constitutes approximately 14% and Norvasc about 9%.
How it Works:
Lisinopril is typically used for the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure, and heart attacks. Norvasc is used for hypertension and angina.
